She invited me to karaoke and said she wanted a boyfriend who supported her art. Fair enough. I had already committed to clapping at whatever happened. Before her song, she handed me a Bluetooth speaker and a phone with three buttons labeled APPLAUSE, ENCORE, and EMOTIONAL CROWD. I thought we were doing a bit. She sang one verse, pointed at me, and stopped until I pressed APPLAUSE. The recording was her own voice yelling, "She's incredible!" layered over what sounded like a dishwasher. During the chorus, she held up two fingers. I hit ENCORE too early. Now recorded-her was demanding another song while actual-her was still singing the first one. Afterward, she asked why I hadn't stood up. I said I was managing her crowd department. She took the phone and played EMOTIONAL CROWD for herself. It was her whispering, "I've never felt this way before." I left before the encore. She had enough chemistry with the audience without me.
