He tried to officiate someone else's wedding
Entered in Week of November 2, 2026
He invited me to a wedding reception for our first date, claiming the couple wanted guests to bring someone. I was the woman buying a nice card for strangers, which should tell you how optimistic I was.
At the venue, he pulled a ceremonial sash from his bag.
Apparently he'd completed an online officiant course and thought weddings worked like open mic nights.
I asked if the couple knew him. He said, "Not in a professional capacity yet."
Not in any capacity, it turned out.
He approached the coordinator and offered to renew their vows after dinner. She explained that their vows were currently twelve minutes old.
He said he could provide a second opinion.
While she summoned someone to escort us out, he asked whether there was a smaller ceremony he could handle. "A cake blessing? A formal introduction of the butter?"
I apologized, left the card, and headed out alone.
He later messaged that I'd failed to support his calling.
His calling was apparently trespassing with a sash.
