His bowling retirement lasted almost one frame
Entered in Week of November 2, 2026
He suggested bowling for our first date and told me to wear something "appropriate for a milestone." I figured that meant socks. I'm a woman with reasonable expectations.
He showed up carrying a framed photo of himself holding a bowling ball. He said tonight was his retirement from recreational bowling. We'd matched two days earlier. Apparently I was the guest of honor.
Before rolling anything, he asked the desk to announce his career highlights. They declined, so he read them himself from a laminated card. One highlight was "consistent attendance during a rainy month."
His first ball went into the gutter. He immediately requested a ceremonial reroll. Then he asked me to stand and clap while he walked slowly past our shoes.
I said I thought we were here to play. He said, "Some nights are bigger than the game."
He finally handed me his framed photo and asked me to present it back to him with a speech.
I put it on the ball return. It was the only thing all night that came back to him without being asked.
